It forms during the crystal's growth. Mineralogists often explain this as a kind of "oscillation" or "competition" between different crystal faces (the prism faces) during growth. As a result, a single, smooth prism face is not formed, but rather a sequence of very narrow, alternating faces, which appear to our eyes as grooves or stripes. This growth feature is one of the reasons why raw crystals are so fascinating—they show the unaltered form in which nature created them.
