Pyritized Wood "Sparking Stone" Pendant
Have you ever seen anything like this as a piece of jewelry? This pendant is a true geological treasure and a statement piece for all who seek the truly extraordinary. Crafted from mysteriously dark, sparkling pyritized wood, also known as "Sparking Stone" or "Spark wood" ("Jiskřivec"), each unique piece comes from the famous brown coal basin (lignite basin) of Sokolov (Falkenau) in the Czech Republic.
About 23 million years ago, during the Miocene epoch, wood was embedded in the swamps of Sokolov and transformed into lignite (brown coal). In a fascinating, alchemical process of nature, this prehistoric wood was not silicified but instead permeated by iron-rich solutions. The organic material was slowly replaced by iron sulfide – creating pyritized wood.
The magical sparkle that gave this material its name may raise a question: Why is it dark gray and not golden-yellow like classic pyrite? The secret lies in its mineralogy: It is often marcasite, a mineral with the same chemical formula as pyrite (FeS₂) but a different crystal structure, which tarnishes darker in the air. Often, remnants of the original organic material (carbon) are also trapped within this matrix, enhancing the dark hue. Furthermore, we are not seeing large crystals here, but rather a surface composed of thousands of tiny crystal points. This dark, fine-crystalline matrix catches the light, creating a mysterious, almost mystical glitter with every movement.
Compact pieces that are stable enough to be crafted into jewelry are an absolute rarity. Only carefully selected, stabilized specimens are discreetly set in our atelier. The rim is electroplated with gold. This warm, gleaming setting perfectly frames the dark sparkle, creating a stunning contrast.
