UV-reactive Hackmanite (Yooperlite) Spheres with Intense Fluorescence
Yooperlite is the original trade name for fluorescent Sodalite-Syenite, a coarse-grained plutonic igneous rock originally found on the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan, USA. An analogous rock, vein Sodalite-Syenite, comes from the Lovozero Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. The unique spheres shown here are crafted from this material.
Each sphere is presented in two images: one in normal daylight and one under long-wave UV light (360 nm). In daylight, black Amphibole crystals are clearly visible, forming a striking contrast to the greyish-green Hackmanite, a special variety of Sodalite. Hackmanite is a UV-reactive mineral and reveals an intense canary-yellow fluorescence under UV light.
