Our septarians from Morocco are offered as polished pairs. The nodules are carefully split in the middle and both halves are polished. This reveals the complex, vein-like inner structure, making each pair a perfect display piece or a special gift. Formation and Geology of the "Dragon Eggs"

Septarians are not single minerals, but geological concretions—essentially hardened clay or mud balls that formed over millions of years on ancient seabeds.

The process of their formation is fascinating:

Formation: The nodules (concretions) formed in moist sediment, often around organic remains.
Dehydration: As environmental conditions changed and the mud dried out, the nodules shrank from the inside out.
Crack Formation (Septa): This shrinkage created the characteristic, often star-shaped or polygonal cracks inside, similar to what is observed when soil dries out. The name "Septarian" is derived from the Latin word *septum* ("partition," "fence"), which describes these internal dividers.
Mineralization: Minerals dissolved in water seeped into these cavities and crystallized.

The Minerals Inside Moroccan Septarians

The spectacular pattern of Moroccan septarians is created by the contrast between the different minerals:

Dark Matrix: The surrounding rock (the original mud ball) usually consists of dark, often black or dark brown, limestone or marl.
Light Veins (Septa): The cracks are typically filled with light, often white or yellowish, Calcite.
Other Inclusions: Sometimes, brown Aragonite or glittering Pyrite can also be found in the veins, lending additional depth to the pieces.
