Hand-Polished Swiss Gabbro
Gabbro is a fascinating, coarse-grained intrusive rock—the plutonic counterpart to the far more common basalt. While basalt erupts onto the surface as lava, gabbro forms when magma cools slowly, deep within the Earth's crust. This slow crystallization within a magma chamber is the secret to its distinctive, coarse-grained texture.Geologically, gabbro is a complex rock rich in feldspar and olivine. While less commonly used for gemstones, gabbro reveals an extraordinary aesthetic when carefully worked.
From Rough Stone to Polished Palm Stone
Our gabbro is sourced from a select locality in Switzerland. In our artisan workshop, we transform this decorative stone entirely by hand: We are not talking about tumbled stones. Each piece is meticulously hand-sanded and polished to a high-gloss finish, revealing its complex internal structure. The result is a unique gemstone that makes Earth's history tangible.
Gabbro: Name, History, and Meaning
Gabbro owes its name to the famous German geologist Christian Leopold von Buch. He named the rock in the 19th century after its type locality—Gabbro, a hamlet near Rosignano Marittimo in Tuscany, Italy.
Thanks to its durability, gabbro has historically been used as a long-lasting construction material, such as for paving stones or as decorative facing on facades. In traditional metaphysical lore, it is also attributed with a calming energy: it is said to act as an energetic shield against negativity and to promote inner peace.
