Odessa Meteorite – A Texas Classic

Explore one of the most historically significant meteorite impacts in the United States. The Odessa meteorite is a true "classic" among iron meteorites, originating from one of the first scientifically recognized impact craters on American soil. For collectors and anyone seeking a tangible connection to the cosmos, an Odessa fragment is a must-have.

Our collection focuses on authentic specimens from this famous fall. We offer carefully selected small fragments under 20 grams—perfect as an affordable representative sample or as a great starting piece for a new collection. As a special highlight, we also feature a rare slice, weighing nearly 100 grams, which reveals the internal structure of this cosmic messenger.

A 60,000-Year-Old Legacy

Approximately 63,500 years ago, this iron meteorite (a Coarse Octahedrite, Class IAB) impacted the desert near the modern-day city of Odessa, Texas. The impact left behind not just one, but an entire field of smaller craters. Although the main crater is heavily eroded and no longer as visually dramatic as Barringer Crater, its scientific importance is undisputed.

The fragments you can acquire from us were buried in the Texas soil for tens of thousands of years. They are witnesses to an age long before human civilization and often bear the characteristic, rough patina that documents their long terrestrial residence.
