Perlite is an amorphous volcanic glass with relatively high water content. Perlite is formed by the hydration of obsidian. Obsidian is an acidic igneous rock belonging to volcanic glasses that are formed in the final stage of a volcanic eruption. The difference between perlite and obsidian lies in the crystal water content. Obsidian contains less than 2 percent bound water, Perlite 2-5 percent.
