Limonite – limonitic ochre, a typical specimen of the so-called iron hat (gossan) – the oxidation zone of polymetallic and nickel deposits. This ochre-yellow, rusty-brown to reddish-brown, highly porous and cavernous aggregate from the Jurassic limestones of the Swabian Alb is presumably composed of alpha-goethite, lepidocrocite, hematite, and jarosite.
