Dipterus was a lungfish that lived in shallow waters, probably both marine and freshwater. It had strong tooth plates, suitable for crushing small invertebrates. Its head was protected by a tough, bony covering. Dipterus valenciennesis (Sedgwick & Murchinson 1828) is widespread in the area of northern Scotland, where it is found in Devonian sediments.
