A Mystery from the Oligocene

Libyan Desert Glass is a fascinating natural quartz glass. The prevailing theory assumes it was formed during the impact of a meteorite about 28 to 30 million years ago (in the Oligocene). The extreme heat and pressure of the impact instantaneously melted the desert sand. Even though other theories of origin are discussed, its provenance remains mysterious. To this day, the dunes of the Sahara continue to reveal these stones.

The heart of this collection is its absolute authenticity. Every single piece of Libyan Desert Glass was found by us personally on our own expedition in 2003 in the area of the Great Sand Sea on the Egyptian-Libyan border. For our jewelry creations, we specifically selected particularly flat and aesthetic specimens.

The surface of these mysterious glasses tells their story. The color palette of the desert glass ranges from light yellow and a greenish translucent shimmer to milky-white tones. As specimens found lying on the sand's surface, they are often naturally polished by the desert wind over eons (ventifacts). Some specimens show distinct "Windkanter" structures (ventifact facets) – fascinating, naturally cut facets shaped by sandstorms over long periods.

Puristic Elegance: The Refinement

In our in-house studio, these geological treasures receive their final form as pendants. We deliberately avoid opulent settings to let the raw, primal character of the stone take effect. A puristic, gol or silver electroplated setting surrounds the stone like liquid metal. This fine layer of precious metal lends the desert glass a shining corona, a noble accent that emphasizes the stone's inner glow.
